The Script, Perry In Charge On U.K. Charts

The Script and Katy Perry continued their reigns on the U.K.'s album and singles charts respectively yesterday (Aug. 24), with the Irish band's self-titled debut for Phonogenic starting a second week at No. 1 while "I Kissed a Girl" moving into a third. The Script also saw its single "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" edge up 3-2 behind Perry, trading places with Kid Rock's former No. 1 "All Summer Long" (Atlantic). Rihanna's "Disturbia" (Def Jam) improved 6-4, Madcon's "Beggin" (RCA) rose 7-5 and Noah and the Whale's "5 Years Time" (Vertigo/Universal) jumped 9-8, while Scottish rock trio Biffy Clyro scored its first U.K. top 10 single at No. 10 with "Mountains" (14th Floor/Warner Music). That comes five years after the band notched the first of nine previous top 40 hits with "Questions and Answers." Welsh rock quartet the Automatic, best-known for the top five hit "Monster" of two years ago, opened at No. 16 with "Steve McQueen," the first single from its new album, "This Is a Fix." Nigerian-British soul artist Taio Cruz climbed 32-20 with "She's Like A Star" (4th & Broadway/Universal). The top four of the album chart were unchanged, with ABBA's "Gold -- Greatest Hits" (Polydor/Universal) at No. 2 again, followed by Duffy's "Rockferry" (A&M/Universal) and Coldplay's "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends" (Parlophone/EMI). The highest new entry, at No. 5, was Monkey's "Journey to the West" (XL Recordings), the album of the contemporary opera written by Damon Albarn and designed by Jamie Hewlett, both of Gorillaz. The show had its premiere season in Manchester last year and made its London debut at the Royal Opera House last month. The show uses nearly 40 Chinese performers including acrobats, martial artists and singers, with an orchestra combining Western and Chinese instruments.

A newly released "Greatest Hits" set on Universal Island by Lynyrd Skynyrd, inspired by the reference to the band's "Sweet Home Alabama" in the Kid Rock hit, entered at No. 16. The original single, which has been bubbling under the top 40 for the last few weeks, climbed back 55-48. On Billboard's pan-European charts, the Coldplay album is in a ninth week at No. 1 on European Top 100 Albums, while Perry's track leads Eurochart Hot 100 Singles for a second week.
